Local business owner Brett Boren was cooking chicken wings 15 minutes prior to Friday’s 11 a.m.opening of Brett’s Backyard Barbecue when a special visitor was waiting for food to be served.
Ines Perez, the visitor, was Boren’s football coach at Round Rock High School where he played quarterback.
“He was my coach for a year during high school,” Boren said. “It’s definitely a nice surprise.”
Like Boren, Perez was once a QB as well. At Southern Methodist University, Perez passed for 410 yards during the 1967 season and once upset a top-ranked Texas A&M in the season opener. Perez completed 10 of 12 passes in SMU’s 20-17 win. Standing at 5-4, Perez was the shortest quartback to ever take a snap for SMU.
He went on to have a coaching career with stops at Round Rock, where he coached Boren during the 1999 season before becoming the athletic director at Lubbock ISD.
“I’ve been very lucky over the years,” Perez said. “I’ve had enough great talent and great people around to make me look good.”
Perez now works part-time for Austin ISD and lives in Buda.
