Wendell Mitchell’s hustle on the basketball court has helped his Aggie team to an 8-6 Southeastern Conference (SEC) record, and it also translated to a victory for a former Aggie classmate in last Monday’s home game against Georgia.

Angela Witzkoske the reigning Miss Southeast Texas of the Miss Texas Scholarship Organization, was set to sing the national anthem before tipoff but her hectic schedule got the best of her and she fainted after the first few notes.

“…Mitchell rushed to catch her before she hit the floor,” according to the Houston Chronicle. “He was the first of several Aggie players to react. The singer’s plight was later attributed to dehydration.”

Not to be out done by Mitchell’s quick thinking, the crowd of 7,000 finished the song.

Duc Nguyen, an A&M former student and executive director of the Miss Southeast Texas organization, was on hand and went on to the floor to help Witzkoske, according to the Chronicle.

“A gentleman sitting close to where Angela was getting treated said that was the most beautiful version of the anthem he’d heard,” Nguyen told the newspaper. “That moved him and the crowd to continue the singing. It was another example of Aggies helping Aggies.”

Mitchell, an Aggie senior and 2015 RHS graduate, was a four-year starter for the Tigers, averaging 25.6 points, 4.0 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 3.6 steals through his 123-game high school. He is the son of Wendell and Sharee Mitchell.

He graduated with a Recreation Park and Tourism Sciences degree in December with a 3.27 GPA, and was on the AD and SEC honor rolls. He plans to pursue a master’s degree.
