Despite weather conditions that forced an early cancellation of the Georgetown High School tennis tournament last Friday, RHS tennis players were able to eke out four medals.
Payton Miller and Eve King made it to the semi-finals of the girls doubles division and Devon Whitsel and Reyna Gonzalez won first place in the consolation bracket.
“All of them did amazing,” said Kristy Kaufmann, RHS head tennis coach. “Even in the freezing weather, it was a really good day for us.”
Miller and King made the semi-finals of the girls doubles division before rain forced tournament organizers to end the tournament. The 2018 regional qualifiers won their opening match 4-3, 4-3 over a Pflugerville team and defeated two Leander girls 5-4, 5-4 afterwards.
Devon Whitsel and Reyna Gonzalez returned to the court for the first time since defeating Brian Van Winkle and Peyton Matthews of Sonora 6-1, 6-0 for the 2018 UIL Class 3A mixed doubles state championship.
In their first match, they lost 4-2, 4-2 to an Austin High School team but bounced back in the second round by beating a duo from Lake Travis 4-2, 4-3. Whitsel and Gonzalez ended the day with a 4-2, 5-4 win over another Austin High School pair, winning first place in the consolation bracket
Freshmen Bianca Zapata was able to play her first varsity tennis match in the girls singles division, losing 4-1, 4-0 to Faith Mason of Belton. The tournament was called off before her first match in the consolation bracket.
“They were able to get a good experience against some tough competition,” Kaufmann said. “All of the schools our kids played were much bigger than us.”
Rockdale will return to the court on Friday, Feb. 22, for the Westwood High School Tournament in Round Rock. The junior varsity will play the day before at the Liberty Hill Tournament.
