Milano and Thorndale High S chool basketball teams met for the first time this season on Friday evening at the Geneva Paceley Gymnasium in Milano.

To kick off the night, the Lady Bulldogs got their sixth district win, defeating the Lady Eagles 62-4 .

“I ’m feeling pretty good with where we are right now,” said THS coach Bradley Dickerson. “Everyone seems to be settling in and playing there role.

“S tarting the season, we didn’t have a lot of experience and a tough schedule definitely added to the growing pains, but it seems like we’ve caught up.”

Dickerson also noted that his team is solid when they start with a lot of energy, like they did against the Lady Eagles.

“ hen we start the game with energy on the defensive end, we play a lot better. As long as we start with energy, we’ll be fine.”

LASTWEEK–Earlier in the week, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Mumford 66-28 .

Lafferty led with 15, Taylor had 14 and Robinson had 13.

TH IS W EEK–TH wrapped up district play against Hearne after press time Tuesday.

They have Friday off and return to action Tuesday against rival Thrall.

The Lady Bulldogs beat the other TH - 2 on Friday, Jan. 3.

L A D Y E A G L E S – MHS went into their game against Thorndale with the cards stacked against them.

They went into Friday’s game without sophmore center McKenna Robertson and her classmate, oor leader S age LoBue.

LoBue, tore her ACL during the fourth q uarter of Milano’s 4 0-36 loss to Granger on Friday, Jan. 3.

“S age going down changed a lot,” said MHS coach Matthus Lopez. “W e had to find another player to run our offense. S he did everything for us on both ends of the court and was getting in a groove before she got hurt.

“W e’ve had Kaitlyn Telg, Kristian Taylor and Bethanie Compton really step for us and run our offense. Natalie Compton now starts for us a freshman and she’s a high-motor player who’s improved every single game.”

Lopez said that despite the setbacks, he still sees this team fighting in the second half of district.

“Our goal for these last six games is to try and make a little magic happen,” He said. “Out of our first six, we lost three of those by four.

“ f we get hot at the right time, who knows what could happen.”

LAST W EEK–Three days, earlier, Lady Eagles traveled to Hearne, where they lost 59-13.

Telg led with four points.

THISWEEK–MH played host to Thrall after press time and and travel to Holland, Friday.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.

B U L L D O G S – The undefeated Thorndale Bulldogs faced off with a young Eagle team ready to fight.

THS led just 11-6 against Milano at the close of the first before slowly building their lead to 24 -13 at halftime.

Thorndale took over in the third q uarter, going on an 18 -5 run, outlasting a Mlano group made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores.

The Bulldogs won 54 -30, closing the week with a 5-0 record in District 27-2A.

Ty Kovar led with a season high of 22 points.

“I’m pretty satisfied up to this point,” said THS boys coach John Kovar. “Our kids have competed and played hard against a very difficult schedule.

“I think we will be fine if we all continue to chip in points and everyone keeps improving and playing their role.”

LAST WEEK–Last Tuesday, Thorndale played their toughest district game so far, beating Mumford 4 3-4 2.

Kolby Neumeyer led Thorndale with 19, Logan Davis had seven and Garrett Bernstein and Chance Betak each had five.

THISWEEK–The Bulldogs faced off with Hearne, the fourth-ranked team in Class 2A by TABC Hoops in their latest poll.

The Bulldogs play a non-district game on Friday against Moulton, the 18 th-ranked team in Class 1A.

Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Thorndale returns to district play on Tuesday when they face Thrall at home.

EAGLES–A young Eagle sq uad battled against a more experienced Bulldog team on Friday evening, sticking with THS until the ninth-ranked team in Class 2A took control of the game, 54 -30.

LASTWEEK–The Eagles fell to Hearne three days earlier 90-32.

THIS WEEK–Milano played host to Thrall on Tuesday evening after press time.

They wrap up the first round of district play on Friday in Holland.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
