Coaches get first look at young team

After two weeks of practices with many new faces, the scrimmage in Groesbeck was an opportunity for coaches, players and fans to get a projection of where this year’s team stands.

“We’ll be okay,” said Jeff Miller, head football coach and athletic director of Rockdale High School, after the Friday outing. “We’ll just have to reevaluate what were doing as a staff.”

Both Rockdale’s Ross Loth, junior, and Jace Robinson, sophomore, took snaps for the first time in a varsity outing against the Goats.

Miller said the pair will both get playing time into the season. He said, it will likely be three or four games into the season before he moves in a particular direction.

The Tigers were up against an opponent that was gunning for the defending state champions. There were many instances where Groesbeck players jumped up and celebrated after a tackle was made.

“They showed an intensity that we never showed,” Miller said.

Throughout the duration of the scrimmage, the Goats got into the end zone a total of three times, and the Tigers got to the goal post once.

Groesbeck also had quite a bit of tenure on the field for them this season. Led by first-team all-district quarterback Ty Hale, receivers who both caught for more than 500 yards last season, Dylan Rand and Brandon Canady and many returning starters on both sides of the ball.

The Rockdale Tigers will play in their second and final scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 23, against the Mexia High School Blackcats.

Due to Blackcat field undergoing maintenance, the scrimmage will be played at Lion Stadium in Franklin.

Freshman and junior varsity play will begin at 6 p.m., and varsity’s start time is set for 7 p.m.

Rockdale begins their season the following week on Friday, Aug. 31, out against the Giddings Buffaloes at 7:30 p.m.
