Three years after being inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame for her on-the-court contributions as a player in the Women’s Basketball League, Rockdale native Liz Galloway-McQuitter made another trip to Knoxville, Tennessee, last month to cut the ribbon on a new display honoring the same league she played in.
Galloway-McQuitter, on behalf of her organization Legends of the Ball (LOB), put together a petition to get a display at the Hall of Fame. She got to visit the display that gives recognition to the WBL, which she described as a “precursor to the WNBA and was the first viable women’s professional basketball league in the United States.”
The former Lady Tiger player and coach played in the WBL with the Chicago Hustle from 1978 through 1980 and put together the petition in order to help preserve the memory of the league and it’s influence on women’s basketball now.
“There is so much history behind this league and the women who played in it.” she said. “Our mission at LOB Inc. is to promote the historic and social relevance of the WBL to inspire future generations to break through barriers, realize their potential, and become leaders for positive change.
“These displays will help do that as thousands of young people, historians, media, and the general public tour the (Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame) and learn about the history of the game.”
