All-State linebacker will join Milano’s King
Body

Beware college ball carriers, JR Harris is on the way.

Rockdale’s rough-and-tumble All-State linebacker will play football for Howard Payne this fall, according to good friend and Milano star Kyle King, who will also play at Howard Payne.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Harris was a first-team All-State selection by the Texas Sportswriters Association.

Harris, who gained statewide attention for playing in a playoff game against West despite being bitten by a wild hog that required four stitches, was a force of nature for the Tigers in their run to a state championship.

Harris blocked three punts against Woodville which turned the Tigers’ playoff fortunes around.

He returned one for a touchdown to hand Rock-dale a 28-24 lead.

He posted a game-high 12 tackles in the game.

His bulldogging tackle of McGregor’s Tayvon Thompson brought horrified groans from the crowd. He had a career-high 20 tackles against the Lions.

The maniacal senior didn’t so much tackle people as he went medieval on them.

Harris finished the season with 152 tackles, 30 for a loss and was the District 10-3A defensive player of the year.
