Things changed for Pete Heintze in the early spring when he received a phone call from former Rockdale assistant Brandon Houston.

Houston told Heintze that he had been offered the head coaching job at Taylor High School and wanted the 25-year-old to be his offensive coordinator.

“He called me that evening to let me know he was offered the job and extended an ‘unofficial’ offer for me to be a Duck as well,” Heintze said. “And it took about two months for it all to come to fruition.”

This isn’t the first time the two have worked together. He worked with Houston on Rockdale’s 2017 state championship team and then joined “Huey” for his first head coaching stint in Buffalo during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Last year, Heintze went back west to Class 5A Elgin where he was the wide receiver coach and an assistant with baseball but leapt at the opportunity to reunite with the guy he’s spent all but one season of his coaching career with. “It feels great to be back

“It feels great to be back coaching with Houston having spent my entire career with him before moving onto Elgin ISD last year,” he said. “I feel extremely comfortable within our offensive system that goes back to 2017 with the Rockdale Tigers.”

“I owe a lot to him,” Heintze said. “Without learning from him and him allowing me to gain his trust, I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity to be the offensive coordinator here in Taylor.”

The staff at THS has the task of turning around a team that has gone 0-20 the past two seasons.

“A coach’s success is directly tied to the student athletes that they get the opportunity to work with,” he said. “I need to be able to connect and create the best relationships that I can. Hopefully we can change the culture and see results on and off the field.”

He also said that his wife Mackenzie and their two kids are excited to be back close to home in Rockdale.
