Last December my wife and I saw a Facebook post about a home for sale here in Rockdale. Neither of us had even heard of Rockdale before, but they were having an open house the following weekend, so we thought it would be fun to take a drive and check it out. Since Gay, my wife, still works, we had only been casually looking for a place to retire at that point.

However, we fell in love with the home, it has everything we need and we just love it. We also love the Central Texas location. So, we made an offer and seven weeks later, we left Houston behind and moved to Rockdale. We haven’t looked back since.

We love the town’s pace, the fresh air, the non-existent traffic and the low crime we’ve found here. Big city living had worn us down and we didn’t realize how much until we got away from it.

Since moving here six months ago we have gone to the Farmer’s Market several times, a donkey basketball game, multiple fish fries, taken weekend drives through the fields of wildfl owers to the surrounding towns, eaten at practically every restaurant in town, took part in a fundraiser and tried to be a part of the community when we could.

Everywhere we’ve gone we have met the nicest people. Everyone has greeted us with warmth and a smile. After living in urban areas for almost all our lives it is a huge and welcome change. Rockdale has immediately become our home.

I’ve been helping at The Reporter by writing the sports stories for the past few months, hopefully I’ve done an adequate job for you. This has afforded me the opportunity to meet coaches and athletes and go to various events helping me learn the “lay of the land” along the way. That will come to an end soon as a new, more qualified, writer will start working at the paper.

All this is to say “Thank You, Rockdale.” Gay and I look forward to becoming more involved in the community and meeting more of you over the next 20 years.
