Last Monday, construction began at Thorndale ISD’s football stadium, where workers ripped up the old surface and replaced it with base on what was once the THS track.
“It’s going pretty well,” said Scott Hawkins, TISD athletic director, “With the bad weather, we’ve had constant little wetness almost since the beginning of construction, so some things are behind schedule.
“But it’s pretty cool and we’re glad to be getting a new track.”
Hawkins, who came to Thorndale in the spring of 2015, said the track has been in bad shape since he started working for the district.
“It’s been pretty bad,” Hawkins said. “We couldn’t get it fixed in the past because the money just wasn’t there and we had a bond that didn’t pass at one point.
“But ever since House Bill three passed, I know Supt. Ivy said that opened up a chance for us to get a new track. It’s just one of the many projects we have going on. We’re getting new pole vault, triple jump and high jump pits and when the track is finished in February, we’re getting a new scoreboard.”
Hawkins, whose Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs ran their 2019 District 25-2A track meet at rival Thrall’s track, also hopes that the upgraded facilities will bring track meets back to the Milam County side of the border.
