Rockdale High School powerlifter Nathan Jeter finished the season with a 10th place finish at the Texas High School Power-lifting Association’s state meet on Saturday at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
“The job Nathan did to get to state was remarkable,” said Jacob Campsey, Rockdale High School head powerlifting coach. “He went into regionals as the eighth-ranked lifter in (his weight class) and finished in the top two to earn a spot to the big dance.”
Competing in the 114-pound weight class and weighing in at 113.6 on Friday, the sophomore squatted 260, bench pressed 165 and dead lifted 315 for a total of 740, tying all of his personal records he set at the regional meet in West on Saturday, March 9. The state champion in Jeter’s class was Joey Rodriguez of Edinburg Idea College Prep who squatted 435, bench pressed 240 and dead lifted 395 for a total of 1070.
This was Jeter’s first trip to the state meet after placing eighth at regionals last season.
THORNDALE—Senior Corey Brooks placed sixth at the state meet in the Super Heavyweight division, reserved for lifters who weighed more than 275 pounds.
Brooks weighed in at 313.6 pounds and squatted 650, benched press 430 and dead lifted 525 for a total of 1605. Brooks improved his bench press 15 pounds and his dead lift five pounds since the regional competition in West two weeks prior but squatted 50 pounds less, resulting in a total 30 pounds lower.
