On Saturday, Rockdale High School’s Nathan Jeter left the Region II Division 3 powerlifting meet at West High School as a qualifier for the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s Division III state meet that starts Friday, March 22 in Abilene.
Jeter weighed in at 113.6 pounds and lifted in the 114-pound weight class, a class that he finished eighth in last year at the same meet, and squatted 260, bench pressed 165 and dead lifted 315, placing second behind Bruceville-Eddy’s Issrael Rosas. Rosas edged out Jeter by 10 pounds.
Jeter broke personal records in all of his lifts and his total of 740 was 100 pounds up from last season’s regional competition.
Jeovanny Navarro and Robert Barrera also competed for the Tigers in West. Navarro placed 10th in the 132 class, weighing in at 128.2 pounds and squatting 315, bench pressing 225 and dead lifting 345 for a total of 885. Navarro broke his personal records in the bench press and dead lift that day. This was his second straight season as a regional qualifier after making the meet last season in the 114-pound weight class. Barrera competed in the 275 class, but failed to make any of his lifts.
THORNDALE—The Thorndale Bulldogs also had one athlete qualify for the state meet in Abilene. Corey Brooks placed second in the Super Heavyweight division, reserved for lifters weighing in at more than 275 pounds. Brooks squatted 700, bench pressed 415 and dead lifted 520 for a total of 1,635 pounds.
Other Bulldogs competing that day were Corbin Preusse, who placed 11th in the 198 squatting 450, bench pressing 255 and dead lifting 420 for a total of 1,125. Mason Liles placed seventh in the 220 and squatted 505, bench pressed 290 and dead lifted 500 for a total of 1,300. Jacob Pedroza placed eighth in the 242 class with a squat of 535, bench press of 290 and a dead lift of 410 for a total of 1,235.
The state meet, which will take place at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene will be Friday and Saturday, March 22-23.
LADY BULLDOGS—
Lauren Newton qualified for the girl’s state meet as an alternate and will get a chance to lift if Morgan Kent of Dublin or Cierra Reyes of Brady is unable to compete at the Division III state meet in Waco this Saturday.
