Rockdale Junior High School football teams battled a tough opponent and adverse weather conditions in their first games at the new Tiger Stadium.
The Troy Trojans handed the eighth grade A team it’s second district loss 24-8 on Thursday, according to Coach Eric Willard.
The Tigers got down early in the first half, giving up two touchdowns to Troy. When the Tigers got their offense on track, they made their way down the field behind some “great blocking,” according to Willard.
Good play from the offensive line led to a 15-yard run by Scott Penny. Pablo Hernandez kicked the extra point and the Tigers ended the first half rain-soaked and trailing 16-8.
The Tiger defense improved in the second half, giving up no touchdowns. Troy scored once off a blocked punt, and the Trojan offense was able to prevent the Tigers from scoring again.
Defensive standouts were linebackers Cade Pantaleon, Joel Scott and Lane Bell, said Willard. Offensive players were Penny, Jose Aboytes and Ashton McEnterffer.
7A- The seventh grade “A” team got their second district win on Thursday, defeating Troy 28-0.
The Tigers went ahead 7-0 early in the game when Wyatt Windham scored on a 40-yard run. On the next series, Kemar Spencer picked a Trojan pass in the end zone to get the Tigers the ball back. Spencer concluded that drive when he caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Blaydn Barcak. The Tigers went into halftime up 14-0.
At the junior high level PAT’s count for two points, according to Willard.
Barcak did all the scoring in the second half. The quarterback started the half off with return touchdown to put his team up 20-0. Barcak also scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak later in the game. His touchdown was followed with a made field goal by Mason Willard to put the Tigers up 28-0.
8/7B - For the combined “B” team, the game came to the final play in their 0-0 tie. With less than a minute to play, the Tiger defense stopped the Trojans on the two-yard line. Miles Greer, Cooper Huff, and Ryan Cranford all made solo tackles to stop the Trojans on the final series.
Earlier in the game, the Tiger defense also played a strong role in preventing defeat. Safety Chris Perez stopped a touchdown in the first half, according to Willard.
Top defensive players were Greer, Huff and Cranford who all made tackles to stop Troy on the game’s final series. The Tigers also had solid play in the second half from Windham and Gerren Marrero had a fumble recovery and interception respectively. Defensive standouts were Cruz San Migel, Sterling Prazak and Dominique Clark.
Offensive standouts were Colton Wallace, Tyler Thomas, Evan Miller, Madden Montelongo, Barcak and Windham.
The junior high teams play their third district contests on Thursday. The Tigers take on the Cameron Yoemen on the road with the combined “B” team kicking off at 5 p.m.
