RHS senior makes cheer team at Tarleton State

Last Wednesday at Tiger Gymnasium, RHS senior Taytum Young signed her letter of intent to continue her cheerleading career at Tarleton State University in Stephenville. As a former gymnast who didn’t cheer for the Blue-and-Gold until her junior year, Young described the opportunity as unexpected.

“Cheering in college wasn’t something I planned on doing until this year,” Young said. “I mainly joined high school cheer just for the fun of it, not expecting myself to fall in love with the sport. And I knew that I wasn’t ready to give it up.”

Earlier this school year, Young started looking into cheer auditions at Tarleton, where she was already interested in attending following graduation from Rockdale.

“The process was very new to my family and me,” she said. “We really didn’t know where to start so we started sending videos out and decided to go to a couple of cheer clinics that TSU had.”

“After going to my second clinic, I got an e-mail offering me to join the cheer team,” Young stated.

She added that she can’t wait to join the Texan cheer squad, where she says she already has a home.

“I’m so excited to be able to cheer after graduation,” she said.

“There are so many new things for me to learn and I know I’ll go there being part of a group and have a support system.”

Young is the daughter of Michael and Lani Young of Rockdale.
