On Tuesday, Oct. 1, Milano High School volleyball coach Wendy King earned her 600th victory with the Lady Eagles in a 25-13, 25-17, 25-23 over Bartlett in front of many MHS fans at the Geneva Paceley Gym.
“I think what I’m proud of most is that all six hundred wins have come here at Milano, my home,” King said. “Milano took me in as a transfer from Gause and the minute I stepped in the door people like Genie Vinton, Billie Jean Warren, Geneva Paceley, Ted Hubert and Roger Hashem took me in and let me know I was welcome here.
“I’ve spent my entire adult life trying to do my best to repay the kindness I was shown.”
King has been the head volleyball coach at Milano for 27 seasons and reached the state tournament four seasons in a row from 2002 through 2005. Two of those, they made it to the state championship game.
“The number of wins don’t matter and I often wonder how many I’ve lost,” King laughed. “The fact I have only ever worked at Milano and have had the honor of coaching generations of young girls makes me proud.”
She also credits Jay Wise, former Milano ISD athletic director, for the huge role he’s played in her life saying that he taught her how to have integrity even when it was difficult and not popular.
