Friday night was a big night for Kelly Kuhl, who earned his 300th win as Bulldog head coach after his team beat Bartlett 11-1.
“I didn’t do any of this alone,” Kuhl said. “It took a lot of great players and assistant coaches along the way to get to three hundred.”
Kuhl has been at Thorndale since 2007, where he had pressure to perform right away due to THS winning a state title in 2005. He delivered immediately with a trip to the state tourney his first year, then made it back with trips in 2009 and 2010. He also brought teams to the regional tournament in 2017 and 2018.
Kuhl chose to be a coach because of his Dad, Doug Kuhl, who was the head baseball coach at Taylor for 27 seasons from 1986 through 2013.
“My Dad is the reason I got into teaching and coaching and (he) spent his entire career in Taylor,” Kuhl said. “He had opportunities to move up, but did what was best for his family and never left. I guess that’s where I got that from.”
“We also have great kids, parents and fans in Thorndale as well as a good education system and athletic program. I want my kids to be able to grow up in this community. I hope I’m able to spend the next 15 years or whatever is left of my career in Thorndale.”
GAME—The Bulldogs helped their head coach get his 300th win after getting hot in their first at-bat, scoring seven runs.
The early scoring was enough as Logan Davis held it down at the mound. The junior pitcher allowed two hits and one run and struck out nine in six innings pitched. Davis led at the plate also, going three-forfour.
Coy Stutts, Riggs Schneider, Ethan Williamson and Bryson Beran also got hits for the Bulldogs.
THIS WEEK—Thorndale finished their series with Bartlett on Tuesday after press time and start their series with Granger on the road Friday.
Coached by Kuhl’s brother Kody, the Lions are 3-12 as of Tuesday afternoon for the 2021 season.
Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
SEASON—THS is 15-8 overall this season and is currently tied for second in District 27-2A with Holland.
