On Thursday, Thorndale powerlifter Hayden Kylberg left regionals in Lumberton as not only a state qualifier with a gold medal in his division, but as the outstanding lifter on heavy platforms for the bench press and the dead lift.
His coach Hudson Evans said he was proud of Kylberg. He also said he is proud of efforts from the rest of the Bulldog qualifiers including Jason Penick, who placed fourth in his division, Raymond Avalos, who placed fifth, Luke Merz and Kaleb Yount.
Kylberg, a junior, will compete for a state championship on Friday, March 26, in Abilene.
ROCKDALE—I n Smithville, Tiger lifter Gavin Aguilar finished fifth in his division.
Although he missed out on advancing to state, Aguilar set new personal records on all three platforms. His squat went up 45 pounds, his bench improved by 15 pounds and he went up 10 on his dead lift.
GIRLS—Together Rockdale and Thorndale have seven girls competing at the Texas High School Womans Powerlifting Championships in Corpus Christi on Saturday.
For Rockdale, Alondra Rubio, Mackenzie Musto, Jesenia Navarro and Jena Locklin are scheduled to compete while Emily Owen, Landri Martinka and Makaelyn Vivas will lift for Thorndale.
