Thorndale is headed to the second round of the playoffs for the second year in a row, defeating the Lady Yeguas in a tiebreaker 20-25, 25-5, 25-27, 25-22, 15-1 in Giddings Tuesday evening.
“It wasn’t the prettiest of wins,” said Angelene Raines, Thorndale High School head volleyball coach. “But a win is a win. We had to dig really deep to pull that one out.”
After losing the first set 20-25, the Lady Bulldogs turned around to make minced meat of Somerville to win the second set 25-5. They lost the following set in a tiebreaker, and evened the match 2-2 in a close fourth set. The Lady Bulldogs crushed Somerville in the tiebreaker 15-1.
Maddie Smith and Landri Leschber led Thorn-dale at the net with 20 and 19 kills. Landry Laywell was a key part of their offense with 18 assists. Maddie Flores led the defense with 17 digs.
Thorndale will play in the area finals on Thursday in Hallettsville against the Refugio Lady Cats.
