The Lady Bulldogs took down Brazos in two games to open the 2019 UIL Class 2A state softball playoffs with a combined 30 runs in less than 10 innings.

“We played really well this first series,” said Lance Betak, THS softball coach. “We got an early lead in both games and kept it.”

Thorndale started off their 18-0 win over Brazos with a bang, scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the first.

They added two in the second and four in the third for the win after four and a half innings. Play stopped due to the 10-run rule.

Kate Casey hit three-for-four, with six RBI’s and Riley White had two hits with three RBI’s. Ashley Kiesling, Jacey Paulsen, Maddie Flores, Madison Kelm, Kelsey Kovar and Jayci Martinka had one hit each and Emilee Baker started off the scoring spree with a home run in the first inning.

White pitched a perfect game with 10 strikeouts.

In game two, the Cougarettes scored their only run in the first inning of the game. THS won the game 12-1 and the series to advance to the area finals against Deweyville in a best-of-three series at Tomball High School, which was played on Tuesday after press time.

Baker led the squad with four singles and White had three hits with three RBI’s. She also pitched 11 strikeouts and allowed three hits in five innings. Kovar, Casey and Paulson each had one hit.

Game two of the series will be played at 7 p.m., Friday in Tom-ball. If the series is tied, game three will be played at noon on Saturday.

Deweyville finished third in District 25-2A and took down District 26-2A runner up Snook 14-3 in the opening round of the playoffs.

“Deweyville is solid all around,” Betak said. “They hit two home runs against Snook and they also have a great defense. The only thing is their pitcher throws slower than what we’ve faced so we’ll have to be patient at the plate.”
