Fans were on the edge of their seats at Giddings High School for Thorndale’s area round matchup with Normangee, a fast-paced team that went undefeated in District 26-2A.
The two teams went back and forth, but the contest ended in the favor of NHS, who won 37-35.
“We just had way too many turnovers,” said THS coach Bradley Dickerson. “We had 11 in the first quarter and a bunch of missed opportunities early and throughout the game.”
Dickerson also had a lot of good things to say about his squad.
“We kept up with them really well,” he said. “I told coach (Lance) Betak after the game that they looked more tired than us.”
This was the final game for seniors Makayla Lafferty and Kelsey Kovar, who both spent all four years of their high school career playing varsity basketball.
“Both of them are the epitome of what high school athletes should be,” he said. “I told our other girls that they should pattern their work habits after them. Did they play perfectly? No. But are they always going to give everything they got? Yes, absolutely.”
Lafferty described her time with the Lady Dogs after the game.
“It’s meant everything to me,” she said. “Being a part of this team is unreal. We all have a great connection and we always work well together.”
“Yes, you have your ups and downs in practice but we always get over those things,” she added. “There’s always been a great connection.”
The Lady Dogs finished second in District 27-2A with a record of 9-2. Besides their two losses to Hearne, THS won the rest of their district games by double-digits.
