Thorndale came out on top at home against Granger 13-4 after Lady Dog bats got hot early with hits from Emilee Baker, Kelsey Kovar, Reagyn Trahan, Emily Reeves and Natalie Garcia, who went four-for-four in Friday’s game.
“That may have been the (hardest) hits we’ve had in one inning,” said coach Lance Betak. “We were just ripping everything.”
The Lady Lions, who came into the game ranked 21st in Class 2A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, put up a fight with three of their four runs in the top of the second. Thorndale’s consistency at the plate, with two runs or more scored in every inning except the third and fifth, got them the game and put’s them in first place in District 27-2A after going undefeated through the first half of the district slate.
Sophomore pitcher Dori Ginn led from the circle with six strikeouts and her classmate Raeghan Carlson hit her ninth home run of the season with a bomb in the third.
THIS WEEK—The Maroon-and-Gold started the second half of district play hosting Rosebud-Lott Tuesday after press time and travel to Bartlett Thursday. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
The second half of district will be a true test for the Lady Dogs, facing Thrall, Bremond and Granger, the other top teams in their district, on the road this time around.
THS is now ranked 21st in Class 2A in the latest TGCA poll released Monday. They moved up two spots from last week’s survey.
BULLDOGS—Thorndale’s boys got hot as well. In the sixth inning, when the ‘Dawgs led 4-3, they scored four more runs after a Kaden Kovar grounder, with one out, turned into an error that led to Cain Brymer scoring as well. A single by Layton Mogford brought in Bryson Beran and Logan Davis, who also got on base by error after Kovar, brought in three more runs, leading to an 8-3 victory.
Davis pitched all seven innings with seven strikeouts. The junior Bulldog also led at the plate with two hits.
THS is 5-0 in district as of press time with two run-rule victories over Milano and a series sweep of Bremond. The wins were over BHS, a 9-8 come from behind victory in Thorndale, and a 10-1 triumph on the road last Tuesday.
Kovar led with three hits and Beran struck out 10 in seven innings.
Mogford, Mason Lindig and Coy Stutts each had two hits and Davis hit a home run in the sixth inning.
THIS WEEK—The Bulldogs finished their series with Holland in Milam County after press time and host Rosebud-Lott Friday, 7 p.m.
