After four straight seasons of first round exits in the playoffs, the Milano Lady Eagle basketball team hopes to make it to the next level under new coach Matthus Lopez.

“I believe the girls’ program has made it to the playoffs the past few years but have been beaten in the first round,” said Lopez, a Cameron native in his second year coaching at Milano. “We’re looking to build on what the girls did last year.”

Last season, the Lady Eagles went 6-6 finishing fourth in District 25-2A last year. Their season came to an end against a tough Normangee team in the first round.

Lopez knows they will face stiff competition this season.

“Our district will be tough this year with Thorn-dale and Hearne being top 10 teams,” Lopez said. “But we want to be competitive in district and make it past the first round.”

They lost Defensive MVP Sterling Robertson and Faith Walton, who made the second team, to graduation. Despite losing two starters, they have many returning pieces.

Sterling’s sister, sophomore McKenna Robertson is back and so is Kaitlyn Telg. The two stand at 6’2” and 5’8”.

“We have height and that is always a good thing in basketball,” Lopez said. “They will be our one-two punch down low.”

Lopez also pointed out that they also have talent outside of the paint.

“We have shooters as well,” he said. “Bethanie Compton and Kristian Taylor will be a big part of what we do as well.”

DIME BOX–The Lady Eagles fell 57-42 to Dime Box in their season opener on Friday.

Robertson opened the season with a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds in addition to a steal and a block.

Sage LoBue also led with 12 points, three rebounds and two steals.

MHS played in Fayetteville on Tuesday after press time and plays in their first tournament of the season Thursday and Saturday in Cameron.

They play Rockdale at 1 p.m., on Thursday.
