The Milano Lady Eagles fell to 3-4 on the season with an overtime loss to Bruceville-Eddy Lady Eagles 43-38, before the Thanksgiving break.
Milano started off strong with a 16-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. They held their five point advantage going into halftime up 21-16, but fell behind when the opposing Lady Eagles outscored the maroon-and-gold to go ahead 28-27 entering the fourth quarter. The Lady Eagles, led by Hannah Batten’s 11 points, made up the one point difference to bring the game to a 35-35 tie at the end of regulation. Bruceville outscored Milano in overtime 8-3 to take to win 43-38.
In addition to Batten, the Lady Eagles were led in scoring by Abby Miller with nine points. Faith Walton and Sterling Robertson also had six points.
“We’re definitely progressing,” said Jordan Merkord, MHS girl’s head basketball coach. “From where we were just a short time ago, we’re starting to pick it up, and the volleyball girls have picked it up really quickly.”
The Lady Eagles gear up for the Thrall Tournament on Thursday with their first game against the Somerville Lady Yeguas at 12:30 p.m.

Boys-The Milano Eagles basketball team fell to 0-2 with a 44-34 loss to the Rosebud-Lott Cougars on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
The Eagles were led by senior post Arthur Soto, who scored 12 points. Christian Thurman, a four year starter who made the all-district 25-2A first team last season, had nine points. Freshmen Layne Telg also had nine points in his second high school basketball game. The contest in Rosebud was Soto and Thurman’s first game after having their first practice the day before. Both were members of the 2018 Milano Eagle football team that lost to top-ranked Mason 63-0 on Friday, Nov. 16.
Prior to their return, the Eagles lost 56-37 to North Zulch on Saturday, Nov. 17.
“The whole thing is a bit raw, but it’s coming together,” said Kyle Edwards, Milano High School boy’s head basketball coach. “If we continue to work, we could find ourselves in a playoff position.”
The Eagles played their first home game of the season against the Somerville Yeguas on Tuesday after press time. They play next at the Lexington Tournament starting on Thursday.
