The Milano Lady Eagle basketball team’s season came to an end with a 66-34 loss to Normangee in the bi-district round of the UIL 2A state playoffs, Monday night in Caldwell.
“Normangee was a tough team,” said Jordan Merkord, MHS girl’s basketball coach. “They did a really good job of trapping us and we got behind early on.”
The Lady Eagles stayed with the Lady Panthers during the first quarter but fell behind in the second as Normangee was able to execute their half-court trap. MHS was down 28-12 at halftime.
Normangee built on their lead with an overpowering defense and eliminated Milano from the playoffs with a 66-34 victory.
Sterling Robertson was Milano’s leading scorer with 14 points, Faith Walton had 7 and McKenna Robertson 6.
This was the Lady Eagles sixth consecutive playoff appearance after finishing the season 16-18 with a 6-6 record in District 25-2A.
MHS will lose two seniors to graduation Sterling Robertson and Elizabeth Pedroza. Batten, Walton, Kristian Taylor, Sage LoBue and McKenna Robertson will return to the court in 2019-2020 season.
“It’s unfortunate our season is over,” Merkord said. “But I’m really proud of the way our seniors stepped up this year and our younger players got a lot of experience to prepare them for next year.”
EAGLES—The Milano Eagles lost their final game of the 2018-19 season 75-53 to Holland on Tuesday night, ending what was an injury-plagued year for the team with a 3-9 District 25-2A record.
“We had a lot of injuries this season,” said Kyle Edwards, MHS boy’s head basketball coach. “Arthur Soto hurt his ankle back in November and Christopher Sootoo played with a pinched nerve in his shoulder throughout district play.”
On Friday, the Eagles marched back from a 13-point deficit at halftime to beat Thrall 74-69. Christian Thurman scored a season high 36 points and Soto had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Mason Westbrook had 10 including the go-ahead three-pointer late in the final quarter. Layne Telg had nine.
The Eagles lost to their Highway 79 rival Thorndale 91-40 on Feb. 5.
MHS will lose five seniors Thurman, Westbrook, Soto, Sootoo and Hayden Weaver. Telg, who was starting point guard as a freshman will return and so will Cordell Spears, who started as a sophomore this season.
