Rockdale High School powerlifting’s award-filled year came to a close in Corpus Christi Thursday with senior Mackenzie Musto taking home a bronze medal, Alondra Rubio placing fifth, Jesenia Navarro finishing in eighth and Jena Locklin ending the meet in 12th.
Coach Ryan Montalvo had high praise for the state qualifiers and the rest of the Tiger and Lady Tiger lifters.
“It was a lot of fun,” he said. “All the success we had started in January before we started going to meets.”
“They worked so hard every day and it paid off late in the season,” Montalvo said. “Couldn’t have asked for a better group of kids.”
For Musto and Navarro, this was the season they finally made it over the regional hump after having consecutive years of medaling throughout the regular season and missing out on state meet berths.
Locklin had been highly touted as a promising lifter over the years by former head coach and now athletic director Jacob Campsey, but had either been sick or injured during the bulk of the season and made it to the state meet this year after improving her dead lift by 20 pounds to beat two girls after coming into the meet ranked fourth to grab the second and final spot to advance to state.
Rubio made it to the championship after taking up powerlifting in late January. Since then, she won regionals in what she described was one of the best times of her life.
RESULTS (squat, bench press, dead lift - total)—3. Musto, 300-190-325-815. 5. Rubio, 370-205-360-935. 8. Navarro, 280-130-270-680. 12. Locklin, 320-150-300-770.
THORNDALE—For THS, Makaelyn Vivas, Landri Martinka and Emily Owen all competed at the state meet with Vivas placing fifth, Martinka finishing sixth and Owen placing ninth.
Coach Hudson Evans said he was very proud of the girls and looks forward to the improvement they will show next year since they are all sophomores.
