VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP
The Lady Tigers went 8-2 after their first batch of non-district volleyball matches in tournament and cross county rival play this past weekend.
Rockdale High School finished first with the most wins in the silver bracket of the Florence Volleyball Tournament, Aug. 9-11.
On Thursday, Aug. 9, the Lady Tigers won all three of the games they played. The beat Taylor High School 25-23, 25-18, Bruceville-Eddy 25-11, 25-5, and Jarrell 25-19, 25-22.
“We played great on Thursday,” said Jennifer Keen, head volleyball coach at Rockdale High School. “We’ve been working on (our defense), and it showed.”
On Friday, the Lady Tigers lost their first two games to the Gateway College Preparatory School of Georgetown 25-22, 23-25, 27-29 and the Round Rock Christian Academy Lady Crusaders 25-21,22-25, 26-28.
Keen said, the team had trouble passing and holding on to leads. They ended the day with a win over the Lady Lions of Granger 25-12, 25-18.
Keen said on Saturday Rockdale drew the same teams they played on Thursday. The Lady Tigers once again defeated the Lady Ducks 25-18, 25-16, Lady Eagles 25-10, 25-16 and the Lady Cougars 25-20, 16-25, 25-17.
“I made some adjustments, and will continue to make (adjustments) until we find the perfect fit,” said Keen.
The Lady Tigers also traveled to Milano High School on Tuesday to take on the Lady Eagles, whom they defeated 25-17, 26-24, 25-14.
The team got off to a slow start, but were aided by Kaylee Criswell’s dominance at the net, and good defensive play from Payton Miller and Reyna Gonzalez, Keen said. The Lady Tigers will have played at Thrall on Aug. 14. Results will be published in the Reporter next week.
They will play in the Cedar Creek Tournament Thursday, Aug. 16-18.
Milano - The Milano High School Lady Eagles tallied a 3-2 record in pre-district match play at the Cameron Tournament Aug. 9-11.
On Friday, they lost in a tiebreaker to the Rosebud-Lott High School Lady Cougars, 25-23, 23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 8-15. The Lady Eagles came back to Yoe High School on Saturday to defeat Marlin in three sets, 25-9, 25-15, 25-20 then lost to Cameron, 22-25, 14-25, 15-25.
They defeated Mumford High School and La Vega High School.
Milano will play in the Bruceville-Eddy Tournament Friday, Aug. 17.
Thorndale - The Thorndale Lady Bulldogs went 2-6 in tournament play this past weekend in Round Rock this past weekend to finish second place in the cooper bracket.
The Lady Bulldogs lost to the Bean High School of Everman 24-26, 25-21, 19-25 at the Westwood High School Tournament, then racked up two victories over Splendora 25-17, 29-27 and Manor 18-25, 25-12, 25-23.
The Lady Bulldogs finished the tournament with five losses against China Springs 18-25, 10-25, Roosevelt of San Antonio 22-25, 7-25, Poth 9-25, 8-25, Leander 13-25, 14-25, and Liberty Hill 19-25, 16-25.
Their next two games are at home Aug. 14 and Aug. 17 is set for Friday, Aug. 17, against Troy and Lago Vista respectively.
