The Rockdale Lady Tigers volleyball team took down the Franklin Lady Lions in their district opener, 26-24, 25-16, 18-25, 25-20 at home on Friday, Sept. 7.
“I’m very excited that we opened with a win for district,” said Jennifer Keen, Rockdale High School head volleyball coach. “There are things we’ll have to improve as we move forward, but I’m glad we got the win.”
The Lady Tigers were able to get past the Lions in four sets in what Keen considered an off night for Rockdale.
Senior Kaylee Criswell dominated at the net with 16 kills and senior Lyndsey Kolar had an all-around help for the Lady Tigers with 13 kills and 5 block solos.
“Lyndsey did great at the net and did a great job in coverage for us,” said Keen.
Keen said, Rockdale also had great play on the back line from senior Reyna Gonzalez, who had 25 digs and junior Payton Miller, with 16 digs. Senior Reese Weise was credited with 35 of the 38 assists.
The Lady Tigers will have played on the road in Cameron Tuesday, Sept. 11. Read next week’s paper for results.
Rockdale plays their next district match against the Lexington Lady Eagles on Friday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m. in the Rockdale High School Gymanasium.
Junior Varsity
Both the junior varsity’s lost to Franklin in two sets. JV 1 lost 19-25, 15-25 and JV 2 lost 13-25,13-25.
The next day, JV 1 played four games in the Cedar Creek Tournament where they placed first in the Bronze Bracket.
The Lady Tigers got off to a slow start Saturday afternoon, losing their first two games to Leander Glenn 7-25, 25-23, 9-25 and Pflugerville Weiss 19-25, 25-9, 16-25. They ended the tournament on a good note with two victories, defeating Bastrop Cedar Creek 25-17, 25-17, and Austin-St. Andrews 28-26, 25-17.
“These girls are improving every game,” said Keen. “They will be a fierce competitor for a district title.”
The Lady Tigers junior varsity will play their next games following the finish of the varsity’s game against Lexington.
Rockdale Junior High
vs. McGregor on Sept. 10
The Lady Tigers 8A won their first district game 25-12, 25-8. Julie Bartsch and Yolianna Castillo had great serving, while Emma Whitsel added aggressive hitting to score points.
The 8B won 25-6, 25-11. Grace Avrin, Mijah Crawford and McKenna Lopez provided key serving for the Lady Tigers.
The 7A won 25-20, 8-25, 17-15. Halle Jimenez had solid serving for the Lady Tigers and Georgia Woodard played well on defense.
The 7B lost 16-25, 23-25. The Lady Tigers were unable to put together a rhythm and came up short in the match, according to Coach Regan Fritsche.
Robinson Tournament, Sept. 8
Key serving from Makalia Jackson helped the 8A Lady Tigers battle back from a deficit to defeat North Belton and win the Robinson Tournament on Saturday.
Julie Bartsch’s 13 kills helped the Lady Tigers beat Axtell 25-23, 25-18. In the first game of the tournament again LaVega, Yolianna Castillo and Emma Whistel recorded multiple aces adding to the team total of 18 and 5 kills. The Lady Tigers won the match 25-5, 25-10.
Communication helped the 7A RJH team take the Robinson Tournament championship away from district rival Cameron.
In the match leading up to the championship game, RJH beat district opponent Academy in three sets, 25-13, 25-27, 15-12. Hailey Webb’s serving was key in the victory.
The Lady Tigers 22 aces helped them beat LaVega in two quick sets in the first game of the tournament.
vs. Lexington on Sept. 6
The Lady Tiger 8A team struggled to find a rhythm during the match dropping the sets 18-25, 9-25.
The 8B team rallied with the Eagles for a while before providing some separation in set one winning 25-16. Set 2 brought some struggles for the Lady Tigers but fought back to take set two 25-22. For the game the Lady Tigers recorded 10 Aces. Jadira Luna and Mckenna Lopez served well for the Lady Tigers.
The 7A Lady Tigers battled a close set 1 but dropped it 23-25. Set 2 the tables turned and Rock-dale found a rhythm and took it 25-14 forcing set 3. Going point for point the Lady Tigers pushed ahead with Halle Jimenez recording the final 5 points for the win. Ashley Gonzalez Reyes had great serving in the game.
The 7B team started out going point for point against the eagles but fell 18-25 in set 1. Set 2 the Lady a tigers battled back to win 26-24 to force set 3 but fell 12-15. Lizzie Zinn played well for the Lady Tigers.
