The RHS girl’s basketball team took home the third place trophy after going 3-1 in the Lexington Tournament.

“I thought we did pretty well,” said Meredith Caffey, RHS girl’s head basketball coach. “Especially playing as many games as we did in a short amount of time, I saw a lot of growth just this weekend.”

On Thursday, the Lady Tigers defeated Round Top-Carmine 51-24. Stats were not taken as other members of the Rockdale coaching staff was down the road in Giddings, where the junior varsity was playing.

On Friday, Rockdale defeated the Dime Box Lady Horns in a 45-19 blowout. The Lady Tigers started the game off on a 19-2 run, and also outrebounded the Lady Horns 17-2.

They were led by Anna Harmon’s 18 points and five steals. Miah Beckwith and Andrea Salazar were also key scorers with six points each.

In the evening, the blue and gold lost to tournament host and district foe Lexington 50-35. The Lady Eagles outscored Rockdale 18-6 in the first quarter and the Lady Tigers were never able to make up the deficit created early in the game. Salazar led the team with 15 points and nine rebounds. Other team leaders were Beck-with, who had nine points and Harmon who had seven points and three steals.

In their final game of the weekend, the Lady Tigers defeated Giddings 35-29. Harmon led Rockdale on both ends of the court with 16 points and four blocks. Salazar’s seven rebounds and three steals from Amajahnae Valdez heled Rock-dale defensively.

“It was nice to have that game against Lexington,” Caffey said. “You’ll get film of your district opponents and learn a lot but seeing it in person is an entirely different experience.

“Even in tournament play, it’s a great preview to see who you’re going up against and how you need to prepare in the near future. It’s also very hard to beat a team twice, let alone three times, so it encourages you as you go into district play.”

Earlier in the week, Rockdale fell to the Crockett (Austin) Lady Cougars 48-41 at the RHS gymnasium.

Junior varsity – Down Highway 77 at the Giddings Tournament, the junior varsity went 2-2 with a 33-23 loss to Wimberley and a 39-22 win against Brenham on Thursday.

On Saturday, the Lady Tigers lost 31-17 to La Grange, and defeated tourney host Giddings 32-6.
