In a tough match on Friday evening against the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s fifth-ranked team in Class 4A, the RHS volleyball squad fell 18-25, 21-25, 21-25 in Caldwell against the Lady Hornets.

Although the Lady Tigers were swept 3-0, head coach Kelsey Hudson said her team rose to the occasion against CHS

“We played really well,” Hudson said. “This was a very challenging team to compete with and although we started in a hole every set, we played our way back into every game.

“Our girls made smart decisions and were very confident throughout the match. We played to win.

Hudson said her group only missed three serves the entire game, something RHS has been struggling with during the first half of the season.

The young Lady Tigers, who have a roster with three seniors, two juniors, a sophomore and three freshman went up against an experienced Lady Hornets team that has eight seniors and five juniors who are coming off a 2018 season that ended with a Region IV Class 4A quarterfinal appearance.

CHS was led by senior Marley Maurer at the net with 13 kills and junior Elizabeth See with 11. Kennedy Cavin was instrumental for Caldwell with 34 assists and Emerson Faust had 13 digs and Delayni Drgac had 10.

Rockdale was led by senior Emily Depine at the net with 10 kills and Yoli Castillo led the blue-and-gold in assists with 29. Payton Miller had 13 digs.

MCCALLUM- On Tuesday, Aug. 27, RHS fell to Class 5A Austin-McCallum 25-21, 19-25, 18-25, 25-27.

The Lady Tigers went back and fourth all game with the Lady Knights, who are coached by former Lady Tiger head track coach Amy Broadbeck.

Haven Jimenez led RHS with 13 kills and Andrea Salazar had 10. Castillo had 39 assists and also had 10 digs. Miller had 19 digs and Depine ended the night with 11.

PRE-DISTRICT- Rock-dale has two more games before they start District 19-3A play on Friday, Sept. 13, at home against Lexington. They had Tuesday off and travel West on Highway 79 to take on the Thorndale Lady Bulldogs, a TGCA- ranked team in Class 2A.

THS is coming off a 2018 state tournament appearance and although they lost five seniors they still have net players Madi Smith and Henderson State-signee Landri Leschber.

RHS faces Moody on Tuesday, Sept. 10, before the beginning of district. The Lady Bearcats are also coming off a hot 2018 season where they went 25-5 and made it to the Region II Class 2A semi-finals before losing to eventual state champion Lindsey, who also beat Thorndale in the state-semifinals before capturing the gold.

“Coming off the way we’ve played,” Hudson said. “I want us to keep playing consistently and being aggressive. I also want our leadership to keep stepping up like they’ve been doing.

“I feel like we have a bunch of potential, we just have to put it all together.”

Rockdale takes on the Lady Bulldogs at 6p.m., in the THS gymnasium.

MILANO—The Lady Eagles finished second at the Bruceville-Eddy tournament going 3-1 this past weekend.

For the second straight weekend, MHS defeated Buckholts taking down the Lady Badgers 25-13, 25-9. Milano then swept tourney host Bruceville-Eddy 25-22, 25-18.

In their third match, Milano was challenged by District 25-2A opponent Granger in a match they lost 18-25, 22-25. The Lady Lions are a ranked team in the latest TGCA Class 2A poll. The Lady Eagles ended their tournament on a solid note when they defeated Evant 25-9, 25-14.

Earlier in the week, Milano defeated Brazos Christian in five sets 26-24, 21-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-13.

THIS WEEK—Milano defeated Bruceville-Eddy in a close match 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-5 on Tuesday after press time and face Moody on Friday at home.

THORNDALE—The Lady Bulldogs took down Lexington 25-22, 25-17, 9-25, 25-23 on Friday at home. Landri Leschber led her team all around with 12 kills and 17 assists. Madi Smith had nine kills and nine assists. Kyndal Robinson had seven kills.

THS also won at home on Tuesday, Aug. 27, against Class 5A Elgin 25-15, 25-10, 25-10. Leschber led the team again in kills with 10 and Kyndal Robinson had 11 assists.

THIS WEEK—Thorn-dale defeated Cameron 25-11, 25-11, 25-20 after press time on Tuesday. They host Rockdale on Friday at 6 p.m.
