At the grand opening of the new Lady Tiger Softball Field, RHS got hot in the third and fifth inning to defeated the Lady Yoe 11-8 in their District 19-3A opener.
“So we kind of had a disappointing Saturday at the tournament,” said Erin Palmer, RHS head softball coach. “We presented ourselves very well tonight and I feel like this was a good showing of what we are capable of.”
The Lady Yoe led early, going up 4-1 into the third, but RHS rallied back.
Andrea Salazar first got on base with a walk, Macy Knesek put the ball into play that the Cameron shortstop bobbled. Ryleigh Eanes walked and Emily Depine stepped to the plate with bases loaded and no outs.
Depine then hit a two-run double that hit the top of the fence.
A Karley Leopold ground out led to Eanes scoring, tying the game 4-4.
The Lady Tigers took the lead with a two out-base hit by Autumn Montelongo. Rockdale ended the inning 5-4.
Cameron battled back leading 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth. The blue-and-gold did stay behind for long when Leopold, Montelongo and Mariana Casarez loaded the bases with no outs for the second time in three innings.
Haven Jimenez stepped to the plate and hit a grand slam with a 2-2 count to put the Rock back on top 11-7.
Rockdale held on and defeated the other team from Milam County 11-8.
Leopold was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts in seven innings.
“This one was a big one,” Palmer said. “Inviting youth league kids out here and having those young, impressionable girls come and see the fight we have was really exciting.
“And beating Cameron is always a plus. So, it was a great night for Rockdale softball and I’m glad we were able to pull together as a team and make it happen.”
According to Palmer, they have a tough district schedule ahead.
“It’s going to be a fight like this every single night,” Palmer said.
“There’s not going to be a game we can take it easy.”

The Tigers led 3-2 after the end of the sixth inning against Thorndale.
The Bulldogs had a huge final inning scoring six runs, going up 11-5 and taking the game after RHS put up two points in the bottom of the ninth.
