The Rockdale Lady Tigers lost 46-32 to Thorn-dale on Monday during their Thanksgiving break.
The Lady Tigers ended the first quarter trailing by three to a team that made the regional quarterfinals in class 2A, but were set back in the second quarter when the Lady Bulldogs went on a 18-4 run. Rock-dale outscored Thorndale 18-15 in the second half, and got within five points of the Lady Bulldogs, but the Lady Bulldogs hit some “great shots”, according to Coach Brian Thomas.
This was Thorndale’s first game with Elise Biar, Jordyn Smith, Maddie Smith, Landry Laywell, and Ashley Pesl. The five returned to the team after playing in the UIL 2A state volleyball tournament the Wednesday before.
Rockdale was led by sophomore Anna Harmon, who had 14 points, 12 rebounds, and six steals. Payton Miller had nine points, and three rebounds. Defensively, Andrea Salazar and Yarely Navarro led with five rebounds each.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Savanna Taylor with 12 points. Smith, and Biar also had 11 and 8 points .
The Lady Tigers play their next games on Thursday at the Lexington tournament, while the junior varsity plays in the Giddings tournament.
Boys
The Rockdale Tigers started the 2018-19 season off with a 28-20 win over the La Grange Leopards on Monday, Nov. 19.
“Defensively, we did great.” Said Sean Coleman, Rockdale High School boy’s head basketball coach. “We did a great job talking to each other and sticking to the game plan.
“However, we have to get better on offense. The guys are getting used to the system, so it will take some time. But I am very proud of my guys and the effort they showed in this first game.”
The Tigers play next at the Lexington Tournament on Thursday and Saturday.
