It was midway through the third when Lexington’s three-quarter trap became too much for Rockdale.

The Lady Tigers held a 12-11 lead at the close of the first quarter against LHS but the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s 25th-ranked team in Class 3A started to gain steam, taking a 19-17 lead at halftime.

When the game was over, the Lady Eagles took home the victory, 43-26.

“They out-hustled us,” said RHS coach Meredith Caffey. “Because of that, we had to look for long distance threes and they were driving in, getting easier baskets.

“That changed everything for us.”

Caffey said the game was a good lesson for the Lady Tigers, who are 1-1 in District 19-3A play.

“We have to work on handling pressure,” she said. “We haven’t seen a lot of it, but when it does happen, how are we going to react to it? We have to change that.

“But we have five days off and we’re going to regroup, recharge and get after it again.”

Due to District 19-3A being one of the largest districts in the state with eight teams, RHS was forced to play their first two district games before the Christmas break.

Even seven-team districts don’t start district play until after the holidays. This means schools with eight-team district go from three consecutive weekends of grueling tournaments without time to recover before beginning district.

“I think we’re a little tired,” Caffey said. “But so is everyone else.”

Rockdale will get a break over the Christmas holiday isn’t scheduled to play in any holidays between Christmas and New Years’ Day.

The Lady Tigers continue district play on Friday, Jan. 3, when they make the 73-mile trip to McGregor to face the Lady Bulldogs.

Tip-off is at 6:15 p.m.
