The Rockdale Lady Tiger soccer team got their first District 26-4A win over Georgetown Gateway 5-4 in a sudden death shootout last Saturday at Tiger Stadium.
After ending regulation game time tied at zero with Gateway, both teams failed to score in the 20-minute overtime that followed.
Coach Gilberto Rodriguez selected five girls to shoot penalty kicks for Rockdale against five Georgetown players.
Four goals were scored by Katia Hernandez, Carla Ugalde Vanessa Gonzales, and Elysia Ruelas for RHS and Gateway scored four goals as well.
In the sudden death shootout, Marina Costilla scored the first goal and Kaylee Criswell blocked Gateway’s attempt for the 5-4 victory.
“Kaylee killed it out there. With a shootout, there usually is a fifty-fifty chance to stop them,” Rodriguez said. “Gateway’s goalie stood still for the very first three goals. But Kaylee guessed on every single shot and she was so close on the ones she missed. That’s really impressive for a kid that hasn’t played soccer before. I’ve played goalie myself and shootout situations can be nerve-racking. We’ve practiced a few times, but not a lot.”
The Lady Tigers took down a Lady Gator team that is 3-3 in district. Criswell who had eight saves and four goals allowed.
“I honestly think it went better than I thought it would go,” said Rodriguez. “Gateway is really good and they’re pretty up there with the top teams in our district.
“I knew we could do it because the first time we played them, we only lost 1-0. This time we came with the idea of actually scoring and we didn’t have a strong back line like we did against Taylor,” he said.
On Tuesday, RHS lost 2-1 to Manor New Tech on the road. Gonzales scored for Rockdale in the second half.
RHS is 1-6 in district. As of press time, RHS is two games behind Eastside Memorial, the fourth place team in 26-4A. The top four teams go to the playoffs. The Lady Tigers lost 3-0 to Cameron on Tuesday after press time and face Eastside Memorial 5 p.m., Friday at home.
MANOR — The Tigers fell to 2-3 in District 26-4A with a 2-1 loss to the Manor New Tech Titans last Tuesday. Fernando Luna scored for RHS. As of press time, the Tigers are in fourth place with a 3-3 record in district. RHS beat Cameron 3-0 on Tuesday after press time and face Eastside Memorial 7:30 p.m., Friday at Tiger Stadium.
