The Rockdale Lady Tiger golf team finished sixth out of 22 schools on Thursday at the Brenham Country Club where they battled forty degree weather in addition to rival Cameron and more than a dozen 5A and 6A schools.
“For the conditions, I thought we played all right,” said Ethan Noel, RHS golf coach. “The weather was really bad and I think our girls were just trying to survive out there.”
Brenham High School tournament organizers ended the tournament after nine holes due to the cold and wet conditions.
Whitley Boyd led Rock-dale with a seventh place finish, shooting a plus nine over par and Eve King tied for 13th with a plus 10. Senior Gracey Burns shot a plus 16 and Anna Harmon shot a plus 20 as an individual medalist. Cassidy Smith shot a plus 22 and Payton Miller shot a plus 23.
“The tournament was a bunch of bigger schools,” Noel said. “Kind of like the boys tournament. You had us, Cameron and East Bernard from Class 3A and mostly Houston area 5A and 6A schools in Brenham that day. Cameron finished one stroke ahead of us and finished fifth.”
The Lady Tigers played on Wednesday at Mill Creek Country Club in Salado, a course Noel said recently finished renovations and was difficult in the past.
Rockdale will not play in a competition over spring break but will return to the Brenham Country Club on Friday, March 22.
On Friday, April 1, the Lady Tigers will compete at the District 19-3A golf tournament at The Campus Course at Texas A&M in College Station.
“The really big thing for us is to keep getting better,” Noel said. “That’s why we go to difficult courses like Lago Vista or Mill Creek.
“That’s why we’re going to see Brenham another time so we can take tournaments like the one we just played as learning opportunities and keep improving.”
TIGERS — The Rock-dale Tiger golf team’s Monday tournament at Mill Creek in Salado was postponed due to cold weather and will be played Thursday.
The boys will also be off during spring break and play at Brenham Country Club on Saturday, March 23, in their final holes before their District 19-3A tournament on Friday, April 8, at the Wildflower Country Club in Temple.
