VOLLEYBALL
With over 15 matches under their belts, the Rockdale Lady Tigers will take the court Thursday as they host the annual Rockdale Tournament.
Several teams will be competing in the RHS and junior high school gymnasiums Aug. 23-25. Last year the Lady Tigers went 5-2 in their own tournament for a second place fi nish.
The Lady Tigers started the week off with a loss to Thrall, 20-25, 19-25, 25-27 on Tuesday, Aug. 14, but turned their luck around in the Cedar Creek Tournament with a fifteenth place finish in the silver bracket.
They won three of four games against 5A and 6A competition. In the first match of the tournament, Rockdale beat 5A El Paso-Parkland in two sets 25-20, 25-18. The Lady Tigers lost their next match against 6A Round Rock-McNeil 8-25, 20-25. But ended the tournament with victories over 6 and 5A opponents Round Rock-Stony Point 25-22, 25-23, and Austin-McCallum 14-25, 25-18, 27-25. JV – The junior varsity volleyball team got fourth place in the Rockdale Tournament this weekend.
“Serving and passing hurt the Lady Tigers in this tournament against some tough competition,” said Jennifer Keen, head coach.
Gateway won first. Caldwell came in second, Thorndale was third and Mumford received consolation.
“Overall the girls played well,” she said. “Their chemistry is coming together nicely.”
Freshmen – In the Rockdale Freshman Tournament, the Lady Tigers took third place. Caldwell won first and Cameron placed second.
“Salome Cardona and Justiss Mayberry did a great job serving for us,” Keen said. “This team is improving daily and they work very hard together.”
Milano –The Lady Eagles improved their record to 7-5 in tournament and game play this past week.
The Lady Eagles played in the Bruceville-Eddy Tournament Aug. 16-18.
The Lady Eagles started the tournament with a loss to Rosebud-Lott 19-25, 23-25 and finished out the day with two wins. The first over tournament host Bruceville-Eddy 24-26, 25-16, 25-20 and the second over district opponent Buckholts 25-9, 25-19.
Saturday, the Lady Eagles started the day with a victory over Bosqueville 25-17, 25-16, and were eliminated from tournament play by Rosebud-Lott, 13-25, 20-25. Milano began its week at home with a victory over Brazos Christian School, Tuesday, Aug. 14, 20-25, 25-8, 25-19, 25-16.
Next up for the Lady Eagles is the Anderson-Shiro Tournament, Thursday, Aug. 23-25. Milano will also face the Bremond Tigers at the Geneva Paceley Gym in a non-district match the following day before heading back to finish the Anderson-Shiro Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 25.

Thorndale – Unlike their neighbors, the Thorndale Lady Bulldogs did not play in a tournament this weekend. The Lady Bulldogs fell to two of Rockdale’s district 19-3A rivals, Troy and Lago Vista.
On Tuesday, Aug. 14, the home-team Lady Bulldogs started off with a win over the Troy Trojanettes in the first set 25-14, but lost the next three sets 10-25, 22-25, 20-25
Troy beat the Lady Bulldogs in four sets, 25-14, 10-25, 22-25, 21-25 and Lago Vista beat Thorndale 17-25, 21-25, 21-25.
The Lady Bulldogs will continue tournament play on Thursday, Aug. 23, and Saturday, Aug. 25 when they head east to play in the Rockdale Tournament.
