Rockdale took five girls to this year’s Regional 2 Division 3 Regional Championship at Academy High School last Saturday. It as the largest group in the school’s history.
“This group bought into the weight room and into being great teammates,” Coach Jacob Campsey said. “I am extremely proud of what the whole team has been able to accomplish. Getting five girls qualified for the regional meet is a big deal.
“Before the meet we talked about controlling what we can control,” he said. “I told them, don’t worry about what the people around us are doing all we can control is lifting as much weight as we can.”
Jesenia Navarro and Mackenzie Musto turned in fifth place finishes in the 114- and 132-pound weight classes respectively.
Navarro lifted 235 pounds in the squat, 120 bench press, 265 dead-lift for a total of 62o. Musto lifted 270, 175, 28o for a total of 725. Jena Locklin lifted 29o, 145, 295 for a total of 730 in the 148-pound weight category. Taytum Young and Haven Jimenez also competed.
The Lady Tigers placed 23rd overall for the meet.
“More so than any lifting team I’ve had, this group of girls possess three qualities that will make them successful at whatever they do,” Campsey said. “The first is a relentless work ethic. The second is that the team was more important than their individual success, and the third thing was their competitive spirit, which was always striving to be better.”
On Saturday the Tigers will compete in the Region 2 Division 3 Regional Championship at West High School.
Nathan Jeter, Jeovanny Navarro, Ty Mayberry, and Gavin Aguilar advanced. Jeter lifted in the 114 weight class 270, 155, 315 for a total 740; Navarro 132 pounds, 300, 220, 335 for a total of 855; Mayberry, 275 pounds, 460, 315, 495 for a total of 1,270 and Aguilar, 275 pounds, 475, 325, 445 for a total of 1, 245.
THORNDALE —Two Lady Bulldogs qualified for the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s State Championship in Waco, Thursday, March 19.
Natalie Deary placed third in the 220 weight class with lifts of 325, 170 and 325 for a total of 820 and Landri Martinka placed fifth in the 105 weight class with lifts of 205, 115, 265 for a total of 585
Makaelyn Vivas, also competed in Academy on Saturday and she placed loth in the 114-pound weight class with lifts of 215, 95, 23o for a total of 540.
Mason Liles will compete in the boys regionals Saturday, 8:3o a.m., at West High School.
