The Lady Tigers fell to 2-2 in district 19-3A play with a 61-34 loss to Little River-Academy.

“You’re never happy to lose,” said Meredith Caffey, Rockdale High School girl’s head basketball coach. “But one of our goals was to go into the break healthy, and we’re doing that.”

Rockdale played their final game of 2018 against a team that went undefeated in district 19-3A play last season, and are picked by Texas Basketball Magazine to win district for the second consecutive year. The Lady Bees are 4-0 after the first two weeks of district play.

Three days before, the Lady Tigers got their second district win at home against the McGregor Lady Bulldogs 46-32. Rockdale built a lead going into the second quarter 16-9. They ended the half up 30-17.

RHS outscored McGregor 16-15 to win the game 46-32.

According to assistant coach Brian Thomas, the primary game changer for Rockdale was the 27 rebounds they grabbed.

Anna Harmon led the squad with 16 points, six rebounds, and two blocks, and Andrea Salazar had 15 points and four rebounds. Amajahnae Valdez was also a key player for the team with seven points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Tigers next district matchup is Friday, Jan. 4 at home against Troy.

Rockdale faces a Trojanette team that is ranked fourteenth in the Texas Girl’s Coaches Association poll. According to Texas Basketball Magazine, Troy is a deep team with all but four players returning from last season’s 7-7 squad. The Trojanette’s have a 10-1 record with their only loss against the number four-ranked team Franklin 76-45 in their second district 19-3A contest.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Tiger gymnasium.
