Hundreds of Tiger fans filled the bleachers at Rockdale High School Gymnasium for more than two hours on Monday night to greet this year’s athletic teams at the annual Meet the Tigers cake auction and social hosted by the Rockdale Tigers Athletic Booster Club.

The host for the evening was RHS Head Football Coach, Jeff Miller. As master of ceremonies he introduced, coaches and players, as well as auctioneer John Fisher.

“It’s a good kickoff for building school spirit as we get ready for an exciting new school year and football season,” said Susan Boyd, Tiger Booster Club Member.

The booster club raised $13,035 from the 40 cakes and items that Tiger football players and others prepared for the social.

The highest selling cake of the evening was one made by senior football player Preston Debault. It was purchased by Keith and Rhonda Debault of Mine Services for $2,000.

The event featured live entertainment from the Golden Girls, cheerleadering squads and music from the Big Blue Band from Tigerland.

“I think it’s great to showcase all the student groups involved with fall semester activities,” said Boyd. “They all did an awesome job last night.”

Scrimmage

The Rockdale Tigers start their pre-season play 7:30 p.m., Friday at Groesbeck High School.

The Goats were ranked fourth in District 9-3A Division I in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine. The district includes Tiger-postseason rival Teague. While the Tigers were ranked first in District 10-3A Division I.

Although Rockdale was hit hard by graduation, they are expected to return to the playoffs because of core players like Cayden McBride, lineman, Jackson Perry, linebacker, and Will Storey, defensive back, according to Texas Football.

The team needs to develop a new core of linebackers, according to Miller.

The Goats, coached by Steve Hale, are lead by his son, Ty Hale, senior quarterback, who finished last season with 2,578 yards and 20 touchdowns. The younger Hale also made first-team all district after leading Groesbeck to the playoffs in 2017.

This will be the Tigers first of two scrimmages before they start the regular season in Giddings, Friday, Aug. 31, where they will play the Buffalos.
