Friday was rough for the hometown Tigers. Lexington, who went three deep in the playoffs last year and are picked by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine to win their district, came to town and they turned their 2-0 record into 3-0 record at Rockdale’s expense.
The final score was 66-7. This is a game we need to have a short memory on, learn from it and forget about it.
The Tigers scored in the first quarter on a 34-yard pass from first-year starting sophomore quarterback Greyson Williams to junior record holding wide receiver De’Andre Stephens. This actually put the Tigers ahead 7-0. This was also the last time in this game the Tigers would get on the scoreboard.
The Eagles defense held Rockdale scoreless for the rest of the game while they scored and scored and scored. Lexington scored 21 in the first quarter, 28 in the second, 10 in the third and seven in the fourth.
Second year Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Hunter Hamrick said, “We were disappointed in our run game. Our defense exposed our negative character traits. We gave up big plays. I think on just eight snaps Lexington got over 300 yards on us. You can’t do that.”
“We have to improve on defense and we are working on that,” he added. “The team is responding. We have got to get the run game going so we can do what we want in our passing game.”
The good news is Rockdale is evenly matched against this week’s opponent Giddings. The Buffaloes are 1-2 after losing to Salado last Friday 55-14.
Remember the Tigers are young and the talent is being cultivated by the coaching staff. We are 2-1 and will probably be 3-1 after Friday b efore w e f ace a good 3-0 Groesbeck Goat team at Tiger Field on Friday, Sept. 27.
