Every year, the Rockdale Noon Lions Club holds a tournament at the Rockdale Country Club to help raise money for a scholarship awarded to an area student in May.

After playing 18 holes and enjoying some fresh cooked hamburgers, the event usually concludes with a helicopter flying over the course and a bunch of golf balls cascading on to the ground out of a bucket held by member Allen Sanders from the copter.

Whoever purchased the ball that lands closest to the hole would win $500. Tickets are sold for the chance to help raise money for their scholarship.

However, due to the helicopter pilot having a family emergency before Saturday’s tournament, organizers were forced to adapt at the last minute.

This year, Lions Club member Paul Dixon wore a blindfold and walked across the green with help from Sanders and dumped the bucket of balls on the ground. James Wilson was this year’s prize winner.

A group made up of Matt Sanders, Joe Sanders, Matt Langwell, Kerry Fletcher and Randy Fletcher also won a prize of $500, which was given to the first place team.

Second place was a team of John Magee, Homer Mowdy, Gerald Morton and James Doss, who were awarded $200. The third place team consisted of Richard Towns, Jeff Caffey, Randy Gilliland and Brian Jones, who won a $100 prize.

Cameron native Anthony Layne had the longest drive with a 155-yard drive and Gilliland had the shot that was closest to the tee.

The amount of money raised wasn’t disclosed as of press time.
