Outmatched by Franklin’s offense and their half-court man-to-man defense, the Lady Tigers lost 62-18 at home Friday.

Rockdale dropped to 2-5 in District District 19-3A play and the Lady Lions, ranked fifth in the Texas Association of Basketball poll, remain undefeated in district and improved to 26-1 overall.

“When you play a team that is highly ranked and supposed to be really good, you want to use the game as an opportunity to work on things that we need to work on,” said Meredith Caffey, Rockdale High School girl’s head basketball coach. “Also, we were hoping that we might get an upset, but that didn’t happen on Friday.”

The Lady Lions got an early lead, ending the opening quarter ahead 23-7. The Lady Tigers struggled on offense for the next two quarters, scoring a total of four points by the end of the third quarter. Franklin led 46-11 going into the final quarter.

“As soon as we crossed the line, they were waiting for us, ready to attack,” Caffey said. “The were a very good defensive team.”

The blue-and-gold scored seven points in the fourth, had trouble recovering the ball and stopping the Lady Lion offense, which was led by Jessie Metcalf’s 23 points.

“Obviously, we saw what we would like to be at some point,” Caffey said. “A loss like that can be disappointing, but also motivation to get in the gym more and work on your game.”

Anna Harmon, a sophomore, led RHS with eight points and five rebounds and Andrea Salazar, a junior, had four points and six rebounds. The Lady Tigers have only one senior on the squad. Karli Marburger, a freshman, also had three points and three rebounds.

Last Tuesday, RHS lost 60-30 to Rogers at home.

The Lady Tigers faced rival Cameron on Tuesday after press time and host Lexington 6:30 p.m., Friday evening.

RHS has played Lady Eagles twice this season. In their first battle at the Lexington Tournament in November, LHS built an early lead to win 50-35.

Two weeks later, the Lady Tigers fought back from 14 points down in the fourth quarter to bring the game within one before getting in foul trouble and losing 52-41.
