Sophomore Ivanna Luna became the first Rockdale athlete since Juan Rubio in 2012 to qualify for the state cross country meet after placing seventh at the Region III meet in Huntsville on Monday.
“I’m very proud of Ivanna,” said Cheryl Meuth, RISD head cross country coach. “She made some early moves early in the race to put herself in the top ten and held that spot from mile one.”
Luna finished seventh in the two-mile race with a time of 12:58.1. Of all six runners that placed before her, only one of them were in her grade or younger.
Fellow sophomore Cady Barcak also ran in the race finishing 41st with a time of 13:59.8.
Barcak qualified for the regional race this year after just barely missing out on qualifying by a single place.
“Cady ran an amazing race as well,” Meuth said. “The fact that she is only a sophomore is exciting.
“I know with her work ethic that she can go far in the future.”
Luna runs at the UIL Cross Country state championships on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Her race time is at 10:50 a.m.
TIGERS–The Rockdale boys’ team also raced at the regional meet finishing 14th out of the 24 teams competing.
Runners for the Tigers were: 58. Chris Perez, 19.11.6; 73. Cristo Hernandez, 19:35.7; 87. Seth Davis, 19:52.1; 98. Albert Silva, 20:13.2; 115. A.J. Hicks, 20:45.8; 144. Alec Silva, 21:45.5; 149. Yovanney Delgadillo, 21:52.6.
“Other than one junior, our boys’ team is all freshmen and sophomores,” Meuth said. “Their future is bright and I can’t wait for this next season.
“They are all self-driven and want a shot at the state meet next year.”
THORNDALE–Mason Drumm also qualified for November’s state meet finishing 14th, but eighth among runners not attached to the top three teams at the Region IV meet on Monday in Corpus Christi.
The Thorndale High School senior ran a time of 17:44. He will also compete at Old Settlers Park prior to Luna’s race at 10:10 a.m. This is Drumm’s first appearance at the state cross country meet.
Both Thorndale’s boys and girls also teams ran at the regional meet with the Bulldogs placing 14th out of 21 teams and the Lady Bulldogs placing 19th out of 22 schools.
