RHS football team members will be honored with a dinner hosted by the Masonic Lodge 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26 at the Patterson Community Center.
Blade Bassler, a multi-sport standout at RHS, University of Houston football player will be the keynote speaker during the event and Tiger Head Football Coach Jeff Miller will address the crowd.
When Bassler was inducted into the 2017 Rockdale Athletic Hall of Honor said Rockdale was a good place to grow up.
“When I went to college, many of my teammates didn’t get to grow up like I did. All my teammates know where I’m from—small-town Texas. It’s an awesome place,” he said, during his Hall of Honor acceptance speech. “Not only did I have my family, I had the entire town to raise me. I’m blessed to be a part of this.”
In football, the 2001 RHS graduate, was a standout quarterback, safety, kicker and punter. He was named to the second-team All-State team as a kicker, was named to All-Brazos Valley team multiple times as a quarterback, punter and kicker and was the District MVP twice.
At the end of his high school career he held RHS football records including most touchdowns in a season and career, most points in a season and career and most field goals made.
He signed with the University of Houston where he lettered three years as a quarterback and tight end. As a basketball player, Bassler was named to the All-District team four times and was a two-time RHS basketball MVP. He also was a three-year regional qualifier in track.
