Rockdale Tigers defensive lineman Ty Mayberry made a verbal commitment to the University of Texas of the Permian Basin on Saturday via Twitter.
“UT Permian Basin was the best decision for me because it’s in my home state,” Mayberry said. “They play in a really tough conference and I love competition. I also heard the community out there is amazing.”
Mayberry was a fouryear starter for the Tigers. This past season he totaled 87 tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks and one forced fumble. Mayberry also took care of business in the classroom as he was named to the Division I District 11 Academic All-District team this season.
Mayberry said he feels that UTPB Falcon’s defense will be a great match for the type of player he is.
“They love very quick and physical guys who have a quick-witted brain,” Mayberry said. “I get labeled as that often, so I definitely feel like it’s a perfect fit.”
Mayberry also says he expects to see the field right away when he arrives on campus in Odessa.
“I don’t expect to start as soon as I arrive on campus but I am expecting to get reps.” Mayberry said. “While I was talking to some coaches, we talked about positions so I’m expecting to get moved around to multiple positions on the defensive line.”
RHS Head Football Coach Jacob Campsey expressed his happiness for Mayberry and expects him to do great things at the next level.
“When you watch him play you can see why he was sought after,” Campsey said. “He’s just a physical force on defense. He’s going to do great things at UTPB.”
Mayberry choose the Falcons over other scholarship offers including Southeastern Oklahoma State and East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. He will be eligible to sign his letter of intent in the February signing day period.
