On Friday, Milano and Thorndale High School track and field teams had a total of 25 athletes altogether qualify for the Region IV meet in Flatonia on Monday.
For the Eagles, Gael Alcala won silver in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.15 and Wyatt Koenig placed third in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:51.14. Layne Ferrell also secured his place in Flatonia, finishing fourth in the discus with a distance of 107-9.
Wyatt’s older sister, Kadance Koening, earned two silver medals at district, finishing second in the mile and the 800-meter run. MHS freshman Itzel Carrillo also took home a silver medal with a time of 14:44.07 in the 3200-meter run. Malina Gordon got bronze in the shot put with a distance of 30-6 1/2 and Melanee Moccia placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 53.22. Lady Eagle sophomore Toni Meyer also advanced with a fourth place finish in the discus. Meyer’s height was 81-10.
THORNDALE—THS senior Branson McCoy wrapped up his final district track meet with three gold medals, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.08 and teaming up with his younger brother Carson, Clason Beasley and Everton White to win gold in the both the sprint relay and the 4x200-meter relay.
Other Bulldog gold medalists were Jack Herzog, who won the pole vault with a height of 10-6 and Stryker Leschber, who won the discus with a 133- 10. Beasley and Blake Roberts racked up the team’s two silver medals, with Beasley running a 23.21 in the 200 while Roberts finished behind Herzog in the pole vault with a 10-0.
Leschber and Carson McCoy both earned bronze with Leschber finishing third in the shot put with a 41-4 and McCoy placing third in the 200 with a 23.54. THS freshman Jayden Clawson secured his first trip to the area meet, placing fourth in the triple jump and the 300-meter hurdles.
For the Lady Dogs, Landri Martinka earned the most hardware. She won gold in the 200-meter dash with a 27.38 and earned bronze in both the 400 and 100-meter dash. Thorndale also won silver in the sprint relay (Natalie Newton, Emilee Baker, Saryn Peel, Kyndal Robinson) with a time of 54.04. The 4x200-meter relay team (Peel, Robinson, Emily Northcott, Natalie Garcia) placed third with a time of 1:57.09 and fourth in the mile relay (Newton, Jordan Amidon, Nicole Bivens, Hadley Meadors) with a 5:09.51.
Meadors also qualified in the 400-meter dash with a 1:07.53 and Northcott advanced, making seven feet in pole vault and finishing fourth overall.
