Thorndale takes on Milano in 85-year rivalry
Body

The Thorndale Bulldogs are looking for revenge, because last year they lost their opening game 47-28 to the Eagles at Pruitt Field in Milano.

This year, Thorndale will face off against the Eagles at Bulldog Stadium at 7:30 p.m., Friday.

In 2017, Thorndale let the game slip away after a 28-28 tie going into the fourth quarter. Four seconds into the fourth quarter, Eagles wide receiver Christian Thurman caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Kyle King, who now plays for Howard Payne University. Thurman, a senior, scored two of the three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to win the ball game 47-28.

The teams have met 20 times since 1932 and the series has been one-sided with Thorn-dale leading 14-5-1. See below for more information.

Before 2007, the Eagles went 72 years without a winning in the series, and, after the 2009 season, the two didn’t play for six seasons.

“It is a rivalry,” said Chad Lagrone, Milano High School head football coach. “Because everyone knows each other so well.”

In 2016, the Bulldogs defeated the Eagles 40-27 in Thorndale, after shutting down the Milano offense and scoring twice in the final quarter during the season opening game.

This season, Thorndale has gotten off to a great start with a 4-1 record and running back Luke Leschber has amassed 559 yards in five games.

“They run the ball very well,” Lagrone said. “We’ll try to eliminate their big plays.”

The Bulldogs one loss was to Holland 21-20. The Hornets were picked to place second in District 13-2A DI by Texas Football Magazine. Thorndale also defeated neighbor Thrall 41-0 on Friday.

Milano, 2-3 overall, beat Thrall in its distict opening game 14-13 and lost to Hearne, favored to win district, on Friday. Hearne was picked to win district by Texas Football.
