Due the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Milam County (as of Tuesday there were 15 confirmed cases), high schools have decided to honor their athletes through social media platforms.
Rockdale High School will hold its first ever virtual spring banquet 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 6 on Facebook.
Coaches from cheer squads, basketball, powerlifting, soccer, golf, track, tennis, baseball and softball will put together a short video discussing the highlights of their season. Certificates will be made for each athlete who participated in winter and spring sports.
“It’s not the ideal situation but we feel like this is the best thing we can do to show our appreciation for the kids,” said RHS Athletic Director Jacob Campsey.
Students can email Campsey at jcampsey@rockdaleisd.net to receive more information on how to receive their certificates.
Thorndale High School will also be honoring their players, according to Athletic Director Bradley Dickerson.
He said each coach will record themselves announcing the awards that the student athletes have received.
Multiple links will be placed throughout the Thorndale ISD website so students and their families can view the coaches’ speeches.
“I really feel sad for all the players, especially the seniors,” Dickerson said. “Hopefully, this event can bring some sort of pride since the season ended in that fashion.”
The date and time for Thorndale’s website presentation has yet to be determined.
