The Milano Eagles failed to keep their win streak alive as they were crushed by the Granger Lions 43-13. The Eagles are now 2-4 on the season and 1-2 in district play.
“We had a field goal blocked for a touchdown and then the wheels came off after that,” MHS Head Coach Chad Lagrone said. “We had some success throwing and running the ball, but the turnovers killed us. We also didn’t tackle well on defense.”
The Lions would get off to a hot start with quarterback Thomas Rhoades connecting with Johnny Ryder on a 32-yard touchdown.
The Lions special teams would also make their presents felt as Donnie Cantwell blocked a Milano field goal attempt. Cantwell returned the blocked kick for a 72-yard touchdown.
Towards the end of the quarter, the Eagles would get on the board with star running back Josh Millar punching in a one-yard touchdown run.
The Lions would dominate the second quarter. The duo of Rhoades and Ryder continued to cause trouble for the Eagles as they connected on touchdown passes of 14 and 53 yards. Cantwell scored the two-point conversion on both touchdowns. The score was 30-7 at the half.
The Granger offense would not let up in the second half. Cantwell would rip the Eagle defense for an 84-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
The Lions struck again as Rhoades scored a touchdown on a 62-yard run.
The Eagles would score the last touchdown of the day in the fourth quarter with Nick Grimes running for a one-yard touchdown.
Quarterback Ethen Knight went 6 of 10 for 100 yards. Millar led the Eagles in rushing on 12 carries for 74 yards, while Ethan Gordon led in receiving with three catches for 55 yards.
On defense, Jeremy Reyes led the Eagles with eight tackles.
The injury bug was not kind to the Eagles on Friday. Millar went down with a knee injury and Knight went down with a hand injury during the game. Their statuses for the rest of the season are unknown at the time.
With injuries pilling up for the Eagles, Coach Lagrone says he needs his team to keep fighting despite being undermanned.
“With all these injuries, I’m not sure who our team is going to be,” Lagrone said. “We’re thin as it is but we’ll just have to keep playing. We just need to work on our fundamentals and keep fighting.”
After this week’s bye, the Eagles will face off against the Iola Bulldogs on Oct. 23 at home.
