On Thursday, the Milano Eagles’ depth issues continued to haunt them as they were defeated by the Burton Panthers 56-6.

In the first quarter, Burton wide receiver Cooper Lucherk scored the first touchdown of the evening on a 43-yard touchdown run. The point after attempt was no good. Lucherk would make his presence felt again in the quarter with touchdowns runs of 23 yards and 31 yards. Both point after kicks were missed. Burton’s Carter Callahan ended the quarter on a 16-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion was no good making the score 24-0 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the Eagles got on the board as quarterback Jayce Todd connected with Nick Grimes on a 54-yard strike. The twopoint conversion was unsuccessful.

The Panthers would respond as they returned the ensuing kickoff for an 80-yard touchdown. The Panther defense also put numbers on the scoreboard with Lucherk returning a fumble for a 30-yard touchdown. The extra point was no good. The Panthers ended the half with Chad Schubert punching in a three-yard touchdown run. Burton led 44-6 at the half.

In the second half, Schubert would score his second touchdown on a fouryard run in the third quarter. The final touchdown on the evening came way of the Burton offense as CJ Smith torched the Eagle defense on a 60-yard run.

For the Eagles, Todd went 9 of 31 for 116 yards and one touchdown. Todd also led the Eagles in rushing on seven carries for 10 yards, while Grimes led the team in receiving with two catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Ethan Gordon led the Eagles in tackles with six.

SOMERVILLE—Due to the game being postponed earlier, in the year because of COVID-19, Milano played their final game against the Somerville Yeguas on Tuesday. The Eagles fell to the Yuegas 62-0.

In the first quarter, the Yeugas defense made a huge play with Jesus Gomez returning an interception for a 39-yard touchdown.

Later in the quarter, Somerville quarterback Johnny Legg began his dominant performance with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Tucker. Legg continued to gash the Milano defense with his arm throwing a 31-yard touchdown pass to Verkoby Woodberry and a 26-yard touchdown pass to Austin Horsely. The Yuegas led 28-0 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the Somerville offense continued to roll as Jeremiah Teague torched the Eagle defense on a 36-yard run. Legg showed off his speed in the quarter with a 32-yard scramble for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good. Somerville continued to uti lize the run game as Deven Green punched in a seven-yard touchdown to end the quarter. Somerville led 47-0 at the half.

In the third quarter, Legg would score his fifth touchdown of the evening on a 43-yard run. The Yuegas defense continued to make plays as Hunter David returned an interception for a 35-yard touchdown.

Defense prevailed in the fourth quarter as neither team recorded any points.

Todd went 4 of 16 for 53 yards. Todd also led the Eagles in rushing with 10 yards on four carries, while Gordon led the team in receiving with two catches for 48 yards.

After the game, Coach Lagrone praised his team on their willingness to play through adversity this season.

“It was a trying season for us,” Lagrone said. “We had to deal with everything from COVID-19 to injuries, but we made it through.”

Lagrone also announced that this would be his last season serving as the head coach at Milano. Lagrone has spent the last 16 seasons as head coach and says he hopes he left a great legacy.

“Being a graduate from Milano, I wanted people to realize that Milano is a good place and we have good kids,” Lagrone said. “I wanted to be able to make an impact on the kids and create men out of young men. I feel that I have done that. I just want to be remembered as a man of integrity, honor, and never giving up on any kid. I love this place and these kids.”

Milano finished their season with a 2-7 record overall and went 1-5 in district play.
