The Milano Eagles were looking to remain unbeaten at the start the 2020 football season but got shut down by the Marlin Bulldogs in a 21-0 loss. The Eagles are now 1-1 on the season.

“Our effort was extraordinary,” MHS Head Coach Chad Lagrone said. “We played really hard. We just had too many turnovers for us to overcome.”

Both defenses played hard to start the game as neither team found the endzone in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Bulldogs quarterback Derion Guillette would find Tydae Mayes with a short pass for a touchdown.

Milano looked to answer on the next drive but fumbled the ball. The ball was recovered by Marlin, which placed them in good field position. However, Milano’s defense stood its ground and stopped Marlin on fourth and goal at the one-yard line. The Eagles quarterback Ethen Knight would get sacked in the endzone by David Haynes III for the safety.

The Bulldogs sought to score one more time before the half but Eagles Hector Munoz intercepted Gullette’s pass and returned it for 60 yards. Marcos Ruelas attempted a 50-yard field goal before the half ended but it was no good. The half ended 9-0 with Marlin leading.

In the second half, both defenses imposed their will as neither team recorded any points in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs’ secondary stole the show with Guillette returning an interception for a 30-yard touchdown and Tra Johnson snagging an interception for a 60-yard return touchdown.

Milano running back Josh Millar had another great game going for 126 rushing yards on 16 carries and 16 tackles on defense.

The Eagles will look to bounce back this Friday as they prepare to face the 1-1 Bremond Tigers at Bremond.
